Enjoy transit in Dubai! Introducing “Waterfront Market Dubai,” a hole-in-the-wall spot

Dubai

Hello! This is Shimao. I would like to introduce Waterfront Market Dubai, one of the spots I enjoyed visiting when I was in transit in Dubai.

Where is Waterfront Market Dubai?

Waterfront Market Dubai is located in the Deira district, where the Spice Souk and other popular places are located. As the name “Market” suggests, it is a building where you can see and buy a variety of foods such as fruits, fish, spices, etc. The market is indoors, so it is comfortable to visit regardless of the weather. It’s also a good place to look for souvenirs! Also, as the name Waterfront suggests, it faces the Persian Gulf, so you can buy lunch at the café and eat it on the terrace while watching the sea.

As for access, there is no metro station nearby, so you will have to take a bus or a cab. As an example, here is the route from the airport.

Dubai Airportー<Metro Red line>ーCity Centre Deiraー<walk>ーCity Centre Metro Bus Stop A2-01ー<bus to C15/C10 Hamirya Port>ーAbu hail Roundabout-01ー<walk>ーarrive

What can I see at the Waterfront Market?

Fish and Seafood market

My top pick is the seafood section! Dubai may have an image of a desert because of its location in the Middle East, but it is also rich in marine products because of its location on the Persian Gulf! The sight of piles of inshore and imported fish, many of which you would never see in your country, is a sight to behold. I got the impression that there were many blue crabs and octopuses. In one corner, an aquarium corner is set up with a large number of lobsters and crabs. In the same area, for some reason, there are also small turtles… Seafood purchased here is prepared in a large kitchen next door. The scale of the kitchen here is quite different from that of supermarkets, so it is interesting to take a peek!

Meat and Poultry market

The meat section is somewhat less vibrant than the fish section. Since Dubai is an Islamic city, there is almost no pork. Still, it is interesting to see the sight of beef or rum hanging on the floor. In the egg corner, there are some eggs that look like emu or ostrich eggs. There are also what look like emu and ostrich eggs in the egg section. Look carefully and you may discover a lot!

Fruit and Vegetable market

The produce section is also well stocked. There are many tropical fruits, and my impression is that they are probably mainly imported. Although it depends on the season, there are piles of huge watermelons, giving a sense of exoticism. A honey corner was also set up at the end of the produce section.

Dry goods and Spice market

Various dried fruits and spices are sold by weight. One of the largest sellers is dates (jujube palm), a specialty of the Middle East. With its crispy skin, sticky pulp, and brown sugar-like sweetness, it is both a dried fruit and a snack. Brown sugar lovers should definitely try it.

Hypermarket スーパー

A large supermarket is located on the second floor. It accepts card payment, which is convenient if you want to buy small items such as drinking water. Also, unlike the market on the first floor, it is well-stocked with daily necessities and non-perishable foods.

How was it? Well, the Dubai Mall and other classic tourist attractions are great, but if you like foreign markets and seafood, you should definitely visit Waterfront Market Dubai too!
