Exploring Stockholm #2: Four Must-Try Restaurants in Stockholm

food

Hello! This is Shimao. When you think of Scandinavian food, you may have a strong image of salmon, but that’s not all! In this article, I will introduce some gourmet foods that you should definitely try when you visit Stockholm.

No. 1 hot dog in my life

The first one is Brunos korvbar. It is a hot dog stand located near the Ostermalm market. Don’t underestimate it as just a hot dog, but it is different from the hot dogs available in Japan.

First, the bread. The bread, the surface of which is baked to order, is no longer like a baguette. It is a must for hard bread lovers like myself. I wish Japanese hot dogs were made with this bread.

And the sausages that make a hot dog a hot dog are amazing! There are so many varieties to choose from that it is impossible to choose at first sight. There are so many different types of sausages, from the type of meat to the manufacturing process, that I honestly couldn’t tell what was what even looking at the menu. You can get up to three kinds of sausages sandwiched in one bread, so you can order the one you are interested in anyway. I don’t know if you can tell from the picture, but it is quite large, so if you are not confident about your stomach, just one sausage will do. It has enough destructive power for a solid lunch. Since it is a popular restaurant, there is often a line, but since it is a stand, the turnover is relatively quick. Your turn will come while you are reading about the different types of sausages and getting lost.

I found this hot dog stand on Youtube. The taste exceeded my expectations and was the No. 1 hot dog in my market. If you visit Ostermalm, be sure to stop by!

Impressive richness! Gelato at Ostermalm Market

Next, let me introduce a shop from the popular tourist spot, Ostermalm Market.

When you hear Ostermalm Market, you might think of fresh seafood, meat products such as elk sausages, and restaurants where you can enjoy dishes made from these ingredients. In fact, there are quite a few sweet shops in the market. There are several chocolate shops, cake shops, and even gelato shops. Among them, I would like to introduce “Betsy Sandberg Choklad AB“.

When I visited the store, it was summer, so even in Sweden, which is located in a high latitude, it was quite hot during the day. At such a time, I stopped by this shop. The name of the store suggests that it may be a chocolate shop, but what I want to introduce is the gelato from this store. The lineup itself is not particularly unusual, with items such as pistachio and berry. However, if you put it in your mouth, you will notice its richness!

The fruit-based gelato has a rich flavor that is as if the fruit itself has been condensed, while still being refreshing and not too sweet. The texture is also very smooth. As for the pistachio gelato, it was so rich that it made me think there aren’t many places with pistachio gelato richer than this shop’s. If you visit Sweden in the summer, be sure to try it!

It’s sure to be a great night out! Viking Cuisine

If you are thinking that you would like to try something unique to the country since you are already abroad, then you should visit ‘Aifur‘. You can taste an unforgettable dinner there.

Aifur is a restaurant with a concept inspired by the Vikings who had a strong influence on the seas of the Nordic countries from the 9th to the 11th century. From the atmosphere of the restaurant to the clothing of the staff and the way of sitting, everything is carefully crafted. The performance of the guide who escorts new customers into the restaurant each time is also enjoyable.

The menu is divided into appetizers, mains, and desserts like a course, but you can also order individual dishes. Each main dish, whether it’s a whole chicken, reindeer (or possibly elk), or fish, is attractive and exquisite. The drinks are also unique, and you can enjoy cocktails made with mead, a honey wine that Vikings often drank. It’s highly recommended to experience a dinner that is truly unique to Sweden! This restaurant is very popular, so reservations are essential. You can easily make a reservation online, so be sure to do so once your travel plans are set!

Can’t stop drinking beer…! Mussels in a heap

Finally, let me introduce “Akkurat,” a bar-restaurant near Slussen. I highly recommend this place to those who love drinking and enjoy dishes that pair well with alcohol. There’s a security guard at the entrance, which might make you feel a little uneasy, but don’t worry, they just check your ID. (We were a group of people in our late 20s, but they were surprised and asked us, “Are you really over 20? Japanese people always look younger than their actual age.”)

Inside the cozy and atmospheric restaurant, you can enjoy various types of alcohol and delicious food. I highly recommend the mussels, which are cooked in a soup base that is likely made with butter and white wine. The umami flavor of the mussels blends perfectly with the soup, and you won’t be able to stop drinking beer. You can enjoy them with the complimentary bread and crackers or scoop up the mussels and broth with the shells. This dish is highly addictive.

In the summer, Sweden stays bright until around 9 PM. Along with can’t-miss dishes such as the mussel soup and beef tartare steak, the long nights in Stockholm went on.

How was it? All the restaurants we introduced were visited by the author and are only the ones we can confidently recommend. If you are interested in food during your trip to Sweden, please consider them as candidates!
