Exploring Stockholm #3: Tyresta National Park, a hidden gem for nature lovers

Sightseeing

Hello! This is Shima. The charm of summer in Sweden is the long sunshine and cool climate. On such days, you would want to relax in a lush green park. This time, I will introduce Tyresta National Park, which I visited during my stay in Stockholm. It’s recommended for those who want to enjoy Sweden’s nature, not just the food and cityscape!

Access to Tyresta national park

Tyresta National Park is a national park located in the outskirts of Stockholm. It is about a one-hour journey from the city center, which involves taking a train and a bus, making it a perfect place for those who want to enjoy nature. I will introduce the actual route taken.

Stockholm Central Station → Take the Metro 43 → Change to a bus at Handen Station → Take Bus 834 → Get off at Tyresta Bay Station.

From the platform of Handen Station, you can already see the national park and the lake, which are part of the Tyresta National Park.

No additional fee is required if you have an unlimited SL ticket!

Who should visit Tyresta national park?

Who Should visit?
  • Who want to feel Swedish nature easily
  • Who love camping
  • Who are crazy about berries
  • Who want to have a picnic with their family

Tyresta National Park has various courses set up, making it enjoyable for anyone, from those who want to take a leisurely walk to those who want to go on a serious hike. There is a beautiful visitor center at the entrance, where you can buy souvenirs and learn about the national park. Light snacks like ice cream are also sold. I visited on a weekend and it was bustling with families

Walk around the national park

After passing through the entrance, there is a grazing area that continues for a while. When I visited, there were horses grazing, and the atmosphere was such that there seemed to be chickens and goats as well. Since the distance is close, please be careful not to have your clothes licked by the animals while taking pictures. As it was just about lunchtime, I ate the lunch they brought while watching the horses graze on the grass, and then set off for the hike.

There are also routes for advanced hikers, but many routes have well-maintained paths and can be walked without special equipment. As it is a welfare state, even barrier-free routes are available. Similar to Japanese mountain paths, markers are placed on trees and rocks to confirm which route you are on. Additionally, signs are installed at key locations. However, it is important to make sure you know which marker corresponds to which route, otherwise, you may get confused (the author realized they had walked the route in reverse towards the end). If you are concerned, it is recommended to purchase a park map at the entrance. In the permitted areas, you can use fire, and you may see friends and families enjoying BBQ together. In addition, camping areas are also available, so it might be nice to spend a night and enjoy the starry sky at night.

Various lakes

As you can see from the map, Tyresta National Park is a park with many lakes. Each hiking route is designed to take you to a specific lake or around the lake. Schools of fish, likely members of the trout family, can be seen swimming in the lakes. Fishing is probably not allowed in the park. Many people can be seen sunbathing on the rocks by the lakeshore, and when it gets too hot, they jump into the lake to cool off.

Summer is berry season, and you can find street vendors selling strawberries, raspberries, and lingonberries all over town. Berry trees are also scattered throughout Tyresta National Park, and the best part is that you can pick them freely! Children can be seen picking and eating berries as they walk along the roadside. Some plants may be toxic, so if you want to pick berries like the locals, be sure to take them only from the trees they were picking from and be cautious about safety.

How was that? Sweden has many magnificent natural wonders, such as primeval forests and fjords, and it would be a waste to just take a city stroll. On a sunny day, be sure to visit Tyresta National Park.
