Hello! This is Shimao. One of the pleasures of traveling overseas is enjoying the local food. Many people get excited about exploring supermarkets and markets in other countries. In this article, I will introduce Östermalms saluhall, a classic tourist spot that is perfect for such people.
Access to Östermalm Market Hall
The Östermalms saluhall is an indoor market located two train stops away from central Stockholm. As a classic tourist spot in Stockholm, both locals and tourists visit it frequently. It’s less than 2 km away from the central station, so it’s also nice to enjoy a 20-30 minute walk in the city. Inside the large hall, there are specialty shops selling various products such as meat, fish, vegetables, and prepared foods, so you can enjoy it as if you are walking around a small town. There are also restaurants and cafes located around the perimeter, so you can relax on the terrace as well.
Powerful seafood

One of the attractions of Sweden is the abundance of seafood. It can be difficult to find fish that is fresh and safe to eat in landlocked countries or tropical regions, but Scandinavia, represented by Norwegian salmon, is a great source of delicious fish.
Due to its high latitude, there are many fish species that are similar to those found in Hokkaido, Japan. It’s fun just to look around at the fish market and see unusual fish and halibut of unusual sizes. Some fish markets even have restaurants where you can have your salmon or lobster cooked on the spot and enjoy it!

I purchased a classic Nordic salmon and wolf fish. Don’t worry, they can cut larger fish to the desired size upon request. The difference in filleting methods and the knives used is also an interesting point. The wolf fish was served as kelp pickled and sautéed, and the salmon was served as a steak. The kelp was brought in by the author. The wolf fish had a non-distinctive white flesh and was delicious. The salmon had a consistently good flavor.
A wide variety of prepared foods

One of the attractive features of the Östermalms saluhall is that it has many shops that sell items other than fresh food. They offer a wide variety of products, from stylish deli items you might see in a department store basement to lunch boxes.
Some shops even have seating areas, and on sunny days, it might be nice to buy a few items and have a picnic in a nearby park. In Scandinavia, prices are generally high, and it’s common for a single item to cost over $4. However, if you worry too much about the cost, you won’t be able to enjoy anything!
Meat of course!

Fish lovers, don’t worry! For those who prefer meat, there are also multiple shops that sell meat products, ranging from raw meat to processed items like sausages.
One unique aspect of Nordic cuisine is that they also offer meat from reindeer and other related animals, so if you’re interested, it’s recommended to try out some jerky.
Additionally, they sell types of meat that aren’t commonly seen in Japan, such as those from birds other than chickens and rabbits, so meat lovers should be able to find satisfaction. There are also various types of cheese sold by weight at the market.
How was that? Whether you buy anything or not, please enjoy experiencing Swedish food culture at the Östermalm Market!
